How to Export Your Letterboxd Data

Letterboxd lets you export your entire viewing history as CSV files. Here's how:

  1. Log in to Letterboxd at letterboxd.com
  2. Go to Import & Export settings — navigate to letterboxd.com/[your-username]/import-export/ or go to Settings → Import & Export
  3. Click “Export Your Data” — Letterboxd will prepare a ZIP file
  4. Download the ZIP file — it contains CSV files for your diary, ratings, watchlist, and reviews
  5. Download Matinee — free on iOS and Android. Use your exported data as reference to log your top watched titles

Note: Matinee does not yet support automatic CSV import from Letterboxd. The team is working on bulk import — check the changelog for updates.

Why Switch to Matinee?

Letterboxd is Movies Only — Matinee Tracks TV Too

Letterboxd is a great movie diary, but it only tracks films. If you also watch TV shows — and most people do — you need a second app. Matinee tracks both movies and TV shows in one place, including episode-level tracking and season ratings.

Streaming Availability

Letterboxd doesn't show where to stream movies. Matinee shows which streaming platforms — Netflix, Hulu, Max, Disney+, Prime Video, Apple TV+, and 30+ others — currently carry each title, filtered by your subscriptions.

Better Android Experience

Letterboxd's Android app has historically been a second-class experience. Matinee is a fully native app on both iOS and Android with the same features on both platforms.

AI Smart Search

Matinee's AI Search lets you find titles in natural language — “English war movies under 2 hours” or “comfort shows like Schitt's Creek.” Letterboxd has basic keyword search only.

Why would I switch from Letterboxd to Matinee?

Letterboxd is a great movie diary, but it only tracks films — not TV shows. Matinee tracks both movies and TV shows in one app. Matinee also shows streaming availability, has AI-powered search, a Smart Watchlist Optimizer, and a fully native Android app. If you watch TV shows too, Matinee is the more complete solution.

Is Letterboxd available on Android?

Letterboxd has an Android app, but it has historically received fewer updates and features than the iOS version. Matinee is a fully native app on both iOS and Android, with the same features on both platforms.

Does Matinee support Letterboxd CSV import?

Matinee does not currently support automatic CSV import from Letterboxd. However, you can manually log your watched movies in Matinee's search interface. The team is working on bulk import features — check getmatinee.com/changelog for updates.

What does Matinee have that Letterboxd doesn't?

Matinee tracks TV shows (Letterboxd is movies only), shows streaming availability across Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, and 30+ platforms, has AI-powered natural language search, a Smart Watchlist Optimizer, and Tonight Mode for deciding what to watch. Core features are free.

Is Matinee free like Letterboxd?

Yes. Matinee's core features — logging, watchlist, social, streaming info — are free. An optional Matinee Pro upgrade adds AI search and the Smart Watchlist Optimizer. Letterboxd's core is also free but charges for CSV export and extra features via Letterboxd Pro/Patron.

Start Tracking Movies & TV Shows

Matinee is free on iOS and Android. Track movies and TV shows, see where to stream, follow friends, and build a smart watchlist — all in one app.
